What this team coaches learned at our speed training course...
He also prepared two teams to come in and support the course for demonstrations. This is twice as many as I needed and it gave me some logistical challenges which proved to be quite beneficial to everyone attending. Two teams made it possible to run through several activities in more detail than normal and it saved the coaches from having to do all these drills themselves. Here is one of the drill we added to the Basic Course just recently: IN the past, we've called this game '8 ball' because the players are running in a figure 8 pattern - then we called it NASCAR because the kids liked that more. Since seeing the Winter Olympic games and Apollo Ono exciting medal run the coaches were calling it "Short Track".... I kinda like this because it looks a lot more like short track speed skating then anything else. ![]() The progressions we taught were as follows: #1 - everyone races everyone for two laps. #2 - everyone races at the same time but you are only trying to beat your partner. #3 - 4 team relay race with the training bib as the exchange baton. Lots of fun for the players and coaches observing. Note: In our speed training camps and club programs we progress this to a very advanced levels by adding in more equipment. The Game Relevance: Players are moving amongst one another with close contact, a specific target/outcome they are all focused on, there is contact and avoiding contact as well as tactics and of course it's all done at high speeds. Fun and Competition. Work rest ratio of 3:1 or 4:1 Enjoy.... Chochi Valenzuela - Director www.SpeedTrainersUSA.com 206-288-3600 PS. This one goes out to the Goal Keepers of the world - Watch this video and try and not say "WOW!" I used to be a Goal Keeper in the pro leagues before the MLS and even at that level I noticed that there were players that were just better then everyone else around them. I don't know what it is exactly but I know it has a lot to do with talent, desire and the perfect skill set matching up with the perfect position. Ant then there were those who seemed to be "something special" amongst all the pros. This video is a good example of an athlete with that "something special" quality. Have a Great Week! |
